Description
ABOUT
This class is for utility staff interested in obtaining a Distribution Systems Operator certification (Georgia and Alabama certified). The course covers the design, installation, inspection and repair of a drinking water distribution system. This course provides the required training hours for the GA Collection Systems Operator certification (27 hours) and meet the WPI Need-to-Know criteria.
COURSE SCHEDULE
This course is virtual only, with a live instructor and asynchronous assignments. The class will meet virtually, on Fridays, from August 21st through December 18th, from 9am-11:30am (EST). Weekly online assignments will be posted on Google Classroom. Participation in instructor led session and completion of weekly virtual assignments are required for attendance.
MAJOR TOPICS:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the components and functions of water distribution systems
- Explain operation and maintenance of pipes, pumps, valves, and storage tanks
- Understand water quality monitoring and common distribution system issues
- Understand the proper installation, maintenance, and function of meters and hydrants
- Explain the importance of disinfection in distribution systems and compare different disinfection methods
- Apply safety procedures and emergency response protocols
- Interpret system maps, read meters, and perform basic troubleshooting
