10/23/2023 - 10/27/2023
Description
Intro to Backflow Prevention 10/23/23
Introduction to Backflow provides the participant with a broad and basic understanding of various backflow devices. Time is spent discussing what is necessary for a functioning well maintained and managed backflow program.
This course is the first day of the Backflow Prevention Tester Training and Certification.
Topics include:
- Basic backflow prevention terminology
- Hydraulic conditions that cause backflow
- State and federal backflow prevention regulations
- And additional responsibilities and liabilities
- Daily breaks are scheduled. You are on your own for lunch.
Course Objective
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Explain the applicable regulations relative to backflow prevention and cross connection control
- Describe responsibilities of water purveyors, plumbing inspectors, health officials, plumbing trades’ contractors and the water customer
- Describe the hazards associated with cross connections
- Define cross connection and list some common cross connections
- Explain the basic hydraulics of a backflow condition and the differences between backflow due to backpressure and backsiphonage
- Describe the different types of backflow prevention assemblies and what backflow conditions they protect against.
Please Note: You must be present for entire course to receive continuing education credit and a Certificate of Attendance.
Cross Connection Control: Survey and Inspection 10/24/23-10/25/23
Survey and inspection is an integral part of a well managed cross-connection program. Participants will tour two local facilities to learn how to identify appropriate methods to prevent backflows for isolation and containment, review new construction plans to eliminate cross-connections, and conduct a field survey demonstrating how to inspect for cross-connections.
An exam is administered on day two of the course and those individuals who successfully pass will be certified Cross-Connection Control Inspectors by the UF/TREEO Center. This is part two of the Program Manager series.
To register for this course, you must either be a Certified Backflow Prevention Tester or have successfully completed the course Introduction to Backflow.
Daily breaks are provided. There is a one hour lunch break but lunch will not be provided so please make arrangements.

Cross connection means any physical arrangement whereby a public water supply is connected, directly or indirectly, with any other water supply system, sewer, drain, conduit, pool, storage reservoir, plumbing fixture, or other device which contains or may contain contaminated liquid. In order to manage such a system, cross-connection professionals must be trained in the essentials of a good cross-connection control program. This course is designed to meet the needs of the cross-connection professional by focusing on the legal aspects of cross connection, retrofitting existing facilities, new construction, testing and maintenance, record keeping, control of assemblies, and training of personnel. This is an intensive two-day program and part three of the Program Manager Series.
TREEO recommends that participants purchase the publication titled: Recommended Practice of Backflow Prevention and Cross-Connection Control (AWWA publication No. 30014, call 800/926-7337).
Upon the completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Review the essential elements of an effective Cross-Connection Control program
- Describe the state required elements a complete cross-connection control program
- Demonstrate the proper technique of introducing a new ordinance to the local authority
